The group was participating in Northfield’s Million Hoodie March to “stand in peace and unity during a time of much violence,” according to organizers.

The event was organized following the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman. Similar demonstrations have taken place since the Feb. 26 death of Martin.

Among those marching Friday was Carleton junior Anisa Suleiman.

“I think there is a lot of prejudice in America,” she said. “I want to be part of the solution.”

As the group made their way down Division Street into the heart of Northfield, plenty of people took notice and stopped to watch and listen to the group.

Did Suleiman believe the message resonated with community members?

“I hope so,” said Suleiman, who added that she’s been the victim of racial profiling.

Also joining the marchers was Northfielder Jon Frasz. When he heard about the event, he said he couldn't miss it.

“I can’t believe the blatant injustice that happened to (Trayvon) and they’re not doing anything about it,” he said. “We need to stand against this.”

After the group arrived to Bridge Square, a list of well-known incidents involving racial profiling and hate crimes was read to the crowd. A moment of silence followed.
