NWS Weather Alert Issued For Northfield Area

NORTHFIELD, MN — The National Weather Service has issued a special weather alert for the Northfield area.

Residents should expect winds up to 40 mph. Penny-sized hail is possible.

"Seek shelter in a sturdy structure," the alert adds.

A few storms could produce large hail and strong wind gusts, and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out across the region Friday.

Here's the specific NWS forecast from the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport:

Friday: Showers and thunderstorms before 4pm, then a slight chance of showers. High near 72. Southeast wind around 15 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 49. Breezy, with a west wind 10 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 74. South southwest wind around 10 mph.

Saturday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 57. South southwest wind around 10 mph becoming east southeast after midnight.

Sunday: A chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 66. East southeast wind around 10 mph becoming northeast in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 53. North northeast wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Memorial Day: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 69. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
