Weekend Planner: Lost Souls and Summer Stories
This weekend, "Mona Lisa" gets inked and Northfield writers will pay tribute to Minnesota's brief but beautiful summer season.
Lost Souls Found Art
Ever wonder what Michelangelo's Adam would look like with a neck tat and a wrap? Northfield artist Nick Sinclair has made a small cottage industry out of tatting prints of masterworks and kitsch paintings. No one is safe, not even the Mona Lisa. The result is striking, and sometimes funny.
Sinclair told Northfield Arts Town that he chanced upon the idea, almost by accident:
Here’s what happened…I had done a show at High Noon, and I got sick of running to Ikea or Target to pick up nice frames, and I was getting ready to do a show in Hopkins. I had this low brow illustrated stuff in these really ornate, gaudy frames with a black mat, and I thought, “That’s cool!”. I liked the juxtaposition between the two styles. So my wife and I started thrift shopping for frames and we were getting ready for a show, and I had a frame with a picture of a girl in a bonnet, and I was gonna throw it and use the frame but I was like, “I’m outta time! I’m gonna tattoo this stupid painting!”. And so I drew on it and I put it up and it sells…

Summer Stories
With fall on the horizon, Northfield authors will pay one last homage to summer, with readings of short stories, poems, and songs. Summer Stories begins at 1 p.m. at the Contented Cow, on Saturday, Aug. 31. The event is sponsored by the Northfield Arts Guild.

Fairy Festival at the Minnesota Renaissance Fair
Ren Fair revelers are in for an especially enchanted weekend. This week's theme centers around the fay folk, as they are sometimes known. There will be a Fairy Tea Party (12 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the Special Events Field), fairy wand and pirate hat making, a costume parade for kids (participants should meet at 1:30 p.m. by the front gate), a Fairy House Competition and more.
