Complaint: Credit Card Fraud Suspect Says He 'Would Not Be Surprised' if He Committed Offense

Nathenael Wondwossen Ashenafi, 20, of St. Paul was convicted of financial transaction card fraud for a large purchase at Oakdale's Best Buy.

A St. Paul man was convicted of credit card fraud after making several unauthorized purchases in Oakdale's .

Nathenael Wondwossen Ashenafi, 20, was sentenced in Washington County District Court last week.

On Sept. 19, 2011, Woodbury Police received a report of a stolen credit card. The complainant said someone broke into his vehicle at Gold's Gym in Woodbury and stole two of his credit cards. The victim said the perpetrator stole his car keys from an unsecured locker at the gym.

The credit cards were used to purchase $6,319 worth of merchandise from the Oakdale Best Buy. There was also an attempted purchase at Target in Woobury for $1,271 worth of merchandise.

On Sept. 28, 2011, Oakdale Police receive a report from Best Buy about an attempted fraudulent credit card purchase. Police apprehended Ashenafi.

Ashenafi told Oakdale Police that "he would not be surprised if it was him that committed the offense" on Sept. 19. He also told officers that he had not done anything since Jan. 24, but also did not deny the offense on the 19th.

Police reviewed surveillance footage from Sept. 19 where they identified Ashenafi making the purchase. 

Ashenafi must pay restitution to the victim. The court system committed Ashenafi to the Commissioner of Corrections for 23 months.
