Five Things You Should Know Today: June 13

It's a good day for fun at the library, and a big day in Minnesota weather history.

  1. It will remain pleasantly, if unseasonably, cool today, with a predicted high near 74, according to the National Weather Service. There’s a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight, mostly after 1 a.m., with a low around 60.
  2. today at the Washington County Library in Oakdale. To participate, call the library at (651) 730-0504, or sign up at the library information desk for a 15-minute reading slot between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Also at the library today: preschool story time at 10:30 a.m.
  3. Today is a memorable day for tragic weather events in Minnesota. In 1930, a tornado destroyed most of the city of Randolph; in 1968, a tornado roared through Tracy, killing nine and causing $3 million in damage. And in 1991, lightning killed a spectator at the U.S. Open golf tournament in Chaska.
  4. On this day in 1966, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its decision in Miranda vs. Arizona, establishing the principle that all criminal suspects must be advised of their rights before being questioned, and leading to the so-called “Miranda warning.” All together now: “You have the right to remain silent …”
  5. Poet William Butler Yeats was born on this day in 1865. “All changed, changed utterly; a terrible beauty is born.”
