PHOTOS: Oakdale Police Memorial Dedicated on Fallen Officer's 30th Anniversary

The Oakdale Police Department Memorial was dedicated in the memory of Officer Richard W. Walton, who died while trying to thwart a robbery 30 years ago.

Thirty years ago an Oakdale police officer was shot and later died from his gunshot wounds.

The officer's memory was honored Thursday afternoon during a police memorial dedication ceremony outside of City Hall.

The Oakdale Police Department Memorial is dedicated to the memory of Richard W. Walton, who died from a gunshot wound he sustained while trying to thwart an armed robbery of a hospital pharmacy. Walton worked as a security guard while he was off-duty.

Walton died on October 25, 1982.

More than 50 community members, city officials and law enforcement officers attended the memorial dedication, including members from the Oakdale Fire Department and the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Oakdale Police Chief Bill Sullivan spoke at the event, in addition Walton's oldest of five children, Annie.
