City Calling for Volunteers to Battle Evil Invaders

Buckthorn, imported from Europe 200 years ago, is taking over Minnesota's wooded areas.

The City of Plymouth is under siege. From plants.

Like many wooded areas around the Twin Cities, Plymouth's groves and woods are beset by the rapacious Rhamnus cathartica, better known as Buckthorn. This hardy invasive species out-competes native plants for space on the forest floor, according to the DNR, typically squeezing out all comers, contributing to erosion, and offering a host for various insect pests. No animals in Minnesota feed on it, meaning it can spread virtually unchecked.

Now, according to the Sun Sailor, city officials are calling for volunteers to fight the invaders. Specifically, they are organizing several "Buckthorn Busts" for this fall, with the aim of pushing back the plant's colonization of our woods.

Residents can join an existing neighborhood bust or organize their own by contacting Forestry Technician Lara Newberger at 763-509-5945.
