‘Deeply Concerning’: Richfield Middle School Employee Jailed

The Richfield Public Schools superintendent said the district acted quickly and the staff member is now in custody as police investigate.

RICHFIELD, MN — A Richfield Middle School staff member has been placed on administrative leave and taken into police custody following allegations of misconduct involving a student, officials confirmed Wednesday.

Richfield Public Schools Superintendent Steve Unowsky sent a message to families and community members on May 14, calling the situation "difficult and deeply concerning."

The district acted immediately after learning about the allegations earlier this week, according to Unowsky.

“We are fully cooperating with law enforcement and deeply appreciate their swift response and dedication to protecting our students,” Unowsky wrote.

Citing state data privacy laws and the ongoing investigation, the district said it is unable to release further information at this time.

The superintendent encouraged students and families to seek support if needed. Counselors and mental health professionals are available, and anyone who feels unsafe or has experienced misconduct is urged to come forward.

"We know this is a difficult moment," Unowsky wrote. "But together we will continue to uphold the values of safety, respect, and care in every school and throughout our community."
