Father Can Leave Prison For Funeral Of Son Killed In Richfield

RICHFIELD, MN — The father of the 15-year-old student who was killed outside a school in Richfield last week will be temporarily released from jail to attend the funeral.

Cortez A. Rice, 32, is the father of Jahmari Rice, who was fatally shot at South Education Center on Feb. 1. Cortez was charged and arrested on Dec. 6 with tampering with a judicial officer. He has remained in custody since then.

Cortez will be furloughed from jail Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A private family visitation will be held in the morning, and the funeral will be held at 1 p.m. at Hope Presbyterian Church in Richfield.

Cortez must wear a monitoring device, cannot drink alcohol or consumer drugs, and cannot possess a firearm during his furlough.

Alfredo R. Solis, 19, and Fernando Valdez-Alvarez, 18, each face three counts of second-degree murder, with intent in the fatal shooting. Bail was set at $1 million for both of them.
