Richfield High School Student Flees After Police Confrontation, Lockdown Issued

The teen fled during a gun theft probe, sparking a lockdown near Annunciation.

RICHFIELD, MN — Richfield High School went into lockdown Thursday morning after a 15-year-old student fled while officers attempted to speak with him about the theft of two handguns, according to police.

At about 10:14 a.m. on Sept. 11, Richfield police responded to the high school at 7001 Harriet Avenue South. As the student was being escorted out of the building by staff, he ran from the school into the surrounding neighborhood, authorities said.

Officers quickly set up a perimeter, and the school was placed on lockdown. Police said the student was located a short time later, hiding in a backyard. He did not have a gun on him when he was found.

Richfield High School is less than 3 miles from Annunciation Catholic School and Church, where two children were killed and more than 20 were injured two weeks ago in a mass shooting.

Police said the investigation into the theft of the firearms remains ongoing.
