Richfield Pedestrian Killed In Suspected Drunk Driving Crash

Richfield Police responded to the fatal pedestrian crash at about 1 a.m. Sunday.

RICHFIELD, MN — A 56-year-old man was struck and killed by a drunk driver early Sunday morning in Richfield, authorities said.

Richfield Police responded to a report of a person down in the street on southbound Nicollet Avenue, just north of 66th Street, at about 1 a.m.

Officers found the man — who had been hit by a vehicle — and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver — identified as a 40-year-old Richfield resident — had parked a short distance away before approaching officers.

Police said the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired and criminal vehicular operation.

Preliminary evidence from the scene indicated that the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk during the crash, police said.

The Minnesota State Patrol assisted with crash reconstruction, and the case remains under active investigation. Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved.
