Three Men Accused of Attacking, Robbing Man in Richfield

Jared Algerone Ray, Maxwell Dleon Smith and Corday Garrett Stamps were charged July 27, 2011.

Three men were taken into custody in Richfield after police said they accosted a man on the street, stole money from his pocket and then pulled a handgun on him when he demanded his money back.

Jared Algerone Ray, 24, Maxwell Dleon Smith, 22, and Corday Garrett Stamps, 23, were apprehended by police July 27, 2011 at an apartment complex on the 700 block of East 78th Street.

According to the police report, the victim was attacked by Smith and Stamps near the intersection of East 78th Street and Chicago Avenue just after 1 p.m. Smith and Stamps got out of a car driven by Ray and approached the victim on foot.

The report said Stamps grabbed the victim and Smith began to punch him in the face, then reached into the victim’s pocket and took out $178 in cash.

According to the report, the victim followed the suspects, demanding his money back, at which point Ray—who had parked in a lot in the 700 block of East 78th Street—got out of the car, pulled out a handgun and asked the victim, “What you going to do about it?”

The victim fled on foot to his apartment on the 900 block of East 78th Street. He told police that he believed that the suspects had gone to his ex-girlfriend’s apartment on the 700 block of East 78th Street; he said the woman is Smith’s current girlfriend.

Police found Ray, Smith and Stamps in a nearby apartment complex parking lot and took them into custody. Police also searched the Cadillac Seville that Ray had been driving and found that it didn’t show any current ownership, but learned that Ray was driving the car in Brooklyn Center in May 2011 when he was cited for a traffic offense.

Charges against the three men are pending.
