2. Rochester Public Schools moves to keep counselors as a 'fixed' expense (postbulletin.com) — Rochester Public Schools will keep school counselors as a centrally funded, “fixed” expense, honoring a $5 million annual commitment made during the 2024 referendum even as the district faces $8.4 million in cuts. The School Board also reverted to an 80-20 split for state compensatory funding, freeing general fund dollars by using more aid to support reading coaches and a lead counselor.

Salvation Army holds Toy & Joy Shop in Rochester (kaaltv.com) — Rochester families in need can pick out free Christmas gifts at the Salvation Army’s Toy & Joy Shop, which served nearly 1,000 children last year and expects similar numbers again. Parents choose toys, books, and stocking stuffers, preserving dignity while making sure kids across Olmsted County still enjoy the holiday. The shop reopened Thursday morning after wrapping up Wednesday night.

Mayo Clinic, patient's family reach settlement in failed heart transplant case (postbulletin.com) — Mayo Clinic and the family of a patient who died after heart transplant procedures at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester have reached a confidential settlement, according to the family’s attorney. The case centered on allegations about how the first transplant was performed and what the patient was told, but both sides are now closing the dispute without a public trial.

Family of Taopi girl looking to receive postcards from all 50 states is very close to her goal (kaaltv.com) — An 8-year-old Taopi girl awaiting a heart transplant at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester is just one state short of her goal to receive postcards from all 50 states. Locals are invited to send postcards or birthday cards to her Rochester hospital address as she now aims to collect greetings from around the world.
