4 Socialist Candidates Projected To Win In Minneapolis Council Races

MINNEAPOLIS — Four of the five Minneapolis City Council candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America are projected to win their elections held Tuesday.

A fifth DSA-backed candidate, Soren Stevenson, is currently leading his opponent, Ward 8 incumbent and Council President Andrea Jenkins.

The unofficial winners, according to Minneapolis election officials, are:

• Robin Wonsley won re-election in Minneapolis City Council Ward 2
  • Only candidate on the ballot
• Jason Chavez won re-election in Minneapolis City Council Ward 9
  • Defeated Daniel Orban
• Aisha Chughtai won re-election to Minneapolis City Council Ward 10
  • Defeated Nasri Warsame, Bruce Dachis, and Greg Kline
• Aurin Chowdhury won in Minneapolis City Council Ward 12
  • Defeated Luther Ranheim, Nancy Ford

Four of the DSA-backed candidates — Stevenson, Chavez, Chughtai, and Chowdhury — also won endorsements from the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.

Minneapolis uses ranked-choice voting. The city will begin ranked-choice voting tabulation at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Patch will continue to provide updates on the elections throughout the day.
