Call The Babysitter, Honey! It's Time For Civics!

Monday night at 7:30 p.m., candidates and spectators will file into Plymouth Congregational Church at the intersection of Franklin and Nicollet Avenues for a potentially game-changing candidate forum.

Despite what a one-person race in Southwest Minneapolis and an almost-one person race for the single open citywide board seat, one observer thinks that this otherwise-dull race signals the end of elections dominated by the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers.

According to Beth Hawkins, education reporter at Minnpost, the fact that the union wasn't able to get its favored candidate—lawyer —endorsed by the local DFL party unit, and because this new debate is being put on by a coalition of six reform-minded civic groups, a new constelation of interest blocks may be aligning.
