Gas Prices Rise In Minnesota Ahead Of Memorial Day Weekend

Minnesotans hitting the road for Memorial Day weekend should be prepared to pay a premium for gas.

MINNESOTA — Minnesotans hitting the road for Memorial Day weekend should be prepared to pay a premium for gas, even if they're only fueling up with standard unleaded.

Gas prices continue to rise in the state and across the country:

  • The current average in the Twin Cities metro is $4.13 per gallon.
    • This time last year, it was $2.83
  • The current statewide average is $4.15 per gallon.
    • This time last year, it was $2.83
  • The national average is even higher, sitting at $4.59 per gallon
    • This time last year, it was $3.03

"As long as the supply remains tight, it will be hard for crude oil prices to fall and consumers will in turn face higher prices at the pump," said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson, in a news release.

Keep tires properly inflated. Underinflation reduces fuel economy, but more importantly, tires low on air degrade handling and braking, wear more rapidly and can overheat and blow out.
Slow down and drive the speed limit. On the highway, aerodynamic drag causes fuel economy to drop off significantly as speeds increase above 50 mph.
Avoid “jackrabbit” starts and hard acceleration. These actions greatly increase fuel consumption.
Use cruise control to help maintain a constant speed and save fuel. However, never use cruise control on slippery roads because a loss of vehicle control could result.
