MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey on Wednesday accused federal officials of lying about a fatal ICE-related shooting in south Minneapolis, saying he has viewed video that contradicts the federal government’s account.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said earlier Wednesday that ICE officers were conducting targeted operations near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue when individuals began blocking officers.

DHS alleged a woman used a vehicle in an attempt to strike ICE officers, prompting an ICE officer to fire what the agency described as defensive shots. DHS said the person was hit and later died.

"They are already trying to spin this as an action of self defense. Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly, that is bull****," Frey said.

Frey also told ICE to leave Minneapolis, saying they are making the city less safe.

Emily Heller, who lives near 33rd Street and Portland Avenue, told MPR News she woke up to a disturbance and saw a vehicle blocking traffic that appeared to be part of a protest against federal law enforcement activity.

Heller said ICE agents were yelling at the driver to leave the area as she attempted to turn her car around.

"She was trying to turn around, and the ICE agent was in front of her car, and he pulled out a gun and put it right in — like, his midriff was on her bumper — and he reached across the hood of the car and shot her in the face like three, four times," Heller told MPR News.
