Mom Dead, Kids Hurt After Unlicensed Driver Runs Red Light: Police

MINNEAPOLIS — A mom is dead and her children are injured after they were struck by an SUV in south Minneapolis, police said. The family was walking across the street when the collision happened, according to investigators.

The driver was unlicensed and witnesses say he ran a red light, the Star Tribune reported.

On Friday at about 7 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Blaisdell Avenue and West Lake Street on the report of a crash involving pedestrians and a vehicle.

At the scene, police found a 36-year-old woman with life-threatening injuries. The woman's 14-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son were also at the scene with non-life-threatening injuries.

All three were transported to Hennepin Healthcare. The mother died days later, on Monday, police said.

The 23-year-old driver of a black Hyundai Sonata stayed at the scene after the crash and cooperated with the investigation, according to authorities. He had no reported injuries. His vehicle had damage to the front and windshield, according to police.
