Penn Avenue Businesses Weather the Road Work

The neighborhood association wants residents to know local shops are still open during construction, the Southwest Journal reported.

With crews still hard at work on the reconstruction of Penn Avenue South, the neighborhood is urging locals to weather the road work and keep visiting businesses.

According to the Southwest Journal, the Armatage neighborhood hosted a party July 17 at 54th Street an Penn to bring people in to the area.

"Our goal is to invite residents up to the business node to make sure they know businesses are open," Tina Erazmus, Armatage Neighborhood Association coordinator, told the journal.

However, some businesses have made changes to their hours. According to the journal, Café Maude is now closed on Mondays and no longer serving weekday lunch, and Wagners is closed until construction ends for the season.

Crews began the first phase of the project in April and will work the entire length of the 2013 construction season. The project includes the removal and replacement of all pavement, curb and gutter, driveway aprons, storm drain inlets, and signal upgrades between Highway 62 and 50th Street West.

The first phase of construction focuses on Penn between Highway 62 and just past 54th Street West. A second phase to finish the project will begin in the 2014 season.

The neighborhood is considering another party when the construction season ends in October, the journal said.
