MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Several people were seriously injured in a mass shooting Monday night at a homeless encampment on private property along Lake Street, officials said.

On Tuesday, Mayor Jacob Frey vowed the encampment will be shut down and issued some of his strongest remarks yet on encampments, directly blaming the landlord for preventing earlier closures.

“If the landlord wants to sue us, we'll see him in court,” Frey said in a statement. “It was his choice to prevent us from closing it twice before, and this won't be tolerated.”

Frey also blasted “equivocation” on the issue, saying: “Whether you’re a private property owner or an elected official, the time for hedging is over.”

The mayor argued encampments are inherently unsafe. “Making encampments more ‘permanent’ is not harm reduction — it entrenches harm,” he said. “Our obligation is to help people transition to safer, healthier alternatives.”

Frey said the city’s Homeless Response team and Mobile Medical Unit will continue daily outreach, while Minneapolis police will patrol to prevent new tents from being set up. “After we offer those services, encampments must be closed,” he said. “We cannot allow them to persist when violence, danger, and tragedy are the norm. More lives will be lost if we do.”

Authorities have not yet released further details about the victims of Monday’s shooting.
