Art Needed For Exhibit At Washington County Historic Courthouse

WASHINGTON COUNTY, MN — Washington County officials are looking for artists to submit their work for an exhibit at the Historic Courthouse that opens in June.

Artists can submit up to three pieces for consideration in the exhibit, which is scheduled to run from June 4 through Jan. 8, 2023. The exhibit will be juried and curated by Megan Arney Johnston, county officials said.

The exhibit will award $200 for “Best in Show,” an award voted on by visitors, as well as $100 prizes for the juror’s award winner, supporters’ award winner and the best artwork by an artist 18 and under.

Any Washington County resident can submit art for consideration for the exhibit, with officials accepting sculptures, photographs, paintings, ceramics, drawings, prints and videos.

Submissions can be made until May 1, with artworks to be selected by mid-May. Artists would be required to deliver their pieces to the courthouse by May 29 to be installed for the exhibit.

Each submission costs $10, which will benefit the Historic Courthouse Restoration Fund, officials said.

The exhibit at the Washington County Historic Courthouse is meant to encourage visitors “to see the world through the eyes of others, and of artists,” and to celebrate “the diversity of people and places” in the county, officials said in their call for artwork.

“By looking at other people, places and spaces, especially the natural environment, viewers can see differently and think differently,” officials said. “Art has a way of getting people to look, and then look again.”

The Washington County Historic Courthouse is located at 101 Pine St. West in Stillwater.

Historic Courthouse exhibit eligibility rules:

  • open to all Washington County residents
  • artists must complete the Open Call Submission Form and include images of artwork to be considered
  • artists may submit up to three digital images of artwork
    • submit work that generally falls into the following categories: People, Architecture, Parks & Nature, Historic Sites, and Artists Under 18
  • media may include sculpture, photography, painting, ceramics, drawing, prints and video
  • include your name, address, phone number and email along with an art list of the works submitted, including title, year, medium, price, dimensions and image number
