Brothers Leave Millions To Stillwater's St. Croix Catholic School

STILLWATER, MN — Two Stillwater brothers who died in recent years left $2.6 million to fund scholarships at the St. Croix Catholic School.

The endowment from John and Jean DeCurtins, who were “generous and lifelong community members,” will support scholarships to help families send their children to St. Croix Catholic School, Sister Maria Ivana announced last week.

John DeCurtins died in 2018 at the age of 95, while Jean DeCurtins died at 100 in 2019, Ivana said.

They were longtime members of the Church of St. Michael and were “true models” of Catholic virtues, living modestly while showing “extraordinary generosity” to those around them, she said.

“Their kindness, compassion and support for the people in their lives was beyond impactful in our community,” Ivana said.

The DeCurtins’ gift will fund a tuition assistance endowment that officials say will help more students enroll at St. Croix Catholic School, which serves students in pre-K through 8th grade. A percentage of the endowment will be made available to the school each year starting in 2023, officials said.

Families must apply for help from the school’s tuition assistance program, which is based on need. Tuition costs up to $5,350 per child.

John and Jean DeCurtins served in the military during World War II, and Jean was the last surviving member of the A&D Last Man’s Club in Stillwater, the Twin Cities Pioneer Press reported.

John worked as a surveyor for Washington County, while Jean worked for Northern States Power, the report states.
