City of Stillwater Accepting Applications for Various Commissions

Applications are now being accepted for openings on the Charter Commission, Downtown Parking Commission, Heritage Preservation Commission, Human Rights Commission and Traffic Safety Review Committee. Deadline is March 29.

The city of Stillwater is now accepting applications for volunteer openings for residents to serve on various commissions.

The following is a news release from the city of Stillwater:

Applications are now being accepted for openings on the Charter Commission, Downtown Parking Commission, Heritage Preservation Commission, Human Rights Commission and Traffic Safety Review Committee.

These are volunteer positions, appointed by the City Council and meet monthly usually in the evenings. 

Charter Commission

The Charter Commission studies the local charter and city government and recommends changes, when appropriate.  It is organized pursuant to Minn. Stat. Chapter 410, and consists of 9 members, who serve a period of 4 years and may serve more.  They meet on the 3rd Monday of the month about four times a year.

Heritage Preservation

The Heritage Preservation Commission safeguards the heritage of the City by working toward the preservation of historical sites and structures.  The HPC consists of 7 members, who serve for a period of 3 years, and are limited to 3 consecutive terms.  They meet on the 1st Monday of the month at 7 p.m.

Downtown Parking

The Downtown Parking Commission oversees the development and implementation of the Downtown Parking Plan. This includes planning for long-range parking lot improvements and day-to-day regulation of public parking spaces.  The DPC consists of 7 members:  5 downtown business or property owners and 2 residents from the broader community.  Members serve 3 year terms and meet the 3rd Thursday of the month at 8:30 a.m.

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission acts as the City’s planning agency.  The CPC consists of 9 members, who serve for a period of 3 years, and are limited to 3 consecutive terms.  They meet on the 2nd Monday of the month at 7 p.m.

Human Rights

The Human Rights Commission aids and advises the City Council in ensuring all citizens of the City equal opportunity in those areas protected by law and in other related concerns.  The HRC consists of 7 members, appointed for 3 year terms, and meet on the last Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. 

Traffic Safety Review

The Traffic Safety Review Committee reviews requests for modifications to traffic control signage, pedestrian safety, and traffic calming. The Traffic Safety Review Committee consists of 10 members, including 2 members from Engineering/Public Works, 2 from Police, and 1 from the Fire Department.  The members serve for a period of 3 year terms, and are limited to 3 consecutive terms.  They meet as needed on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, meeting times vary, in Council Chambers, Room 213.

The City of Stillwater welcomes its citizens to share their talents and perspectives by serving on an advisory board or commission. In exchange for your commitment of both time and effort, these committees influence the policies, actions and progress of our community. 

Criteria for evaluation includes, but are not limited to: personal and professional experience relating to the subject area of the board; knowledge of the community; knowledge of city government; and experience from similar appointments.

Application deadline is March 29.
