Now-Defunct Stillwater Farm Linked To CWD Farm In Wisconsin

A Stillwater deer farm has been linked to a farm in Wisconsin where the chronic wasting disease was recently discovered.

STILLWATER, MN — A Stillwater deer farm received two deer in 2016 that came from a Wisconsin farm where chronic wasting disease (CWD) was discovered in August 2021, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

"The news that Minnesota deer farms imported deer from a Wisconsin farm infected with CWD is extremely concerning," said DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen in a news release.

"The DNR is actively considering management responses to this latest threat to Minnesota’s wild deer."

The DNR is currently trying to track down the two deer that were transferred to the Stillwater farm — which is now out of business — in 2016.

A Clear Lake farm received three deer from the Wisconsin farm in the fall of 2017, the DNR said.

Two of those deer were killed in early 2021, and CWD was not detected in them. The third deer is still alive, and will be tested, the DNR said.

The entire Clear Lake herd is quarantined.
