Stillwater Baseball's State Semifinal Postponed Until Thursday

Officials called off Stillwater's game after rain and lightning moved into the Twin Cities on Wednesday afternoon.

STILLWATER, MN — The Stillwater Area High School baseball team will head back to St. Paul's CHS Field on Thursday to continue fighting for a state title after its semifinal game was postponed Wednesday.

Officials called off Maple Grove's noon game against Farmington in the second inning with the game still scoreless after rain and lightning moved into the Twin Cities metro Wednesday afternoon.

Stillwater was scheduled to play Chanhassen at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, but that semifinal is now due to start 24 hours later, according to the Minnesota State High School League.

Stillwater edged Sartell 6-5 on Tuesday to earn a spot in the semifinal game against Chanhassen.

Sartell got off to a strong start Tuesday, putting six of their first seven batters on base and scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, according to the MSHSL.

Stillwater immediately replied, scoring all six of its runs in the first inning, which lasted 42 minutes, the MSHSL said. Mason McCurdy and Jacob Carlson hit RBI singles before Joshua Wallace drove in three runs on a bases-loaded hit, according to the game report.

Wallace earned the win as pitcher for the Ponies, while Brayden Hellum retired Sartell's final five batters to earn the save, the MSHSL said.

Stillwater will be Class 4A state champions with two more wins.

The winner of Stillwater-Chanhassen will face Farmington or Maple Grove in the state final, scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Target Field.

The losers of those two games will play for third place at 5 p.m. Thursday at CHS Field.
