Stillwater Crews To Plow Loop Trail In Wisconsin This Winter

STILLWATER, MN — Stillwater crews are set to venture into Wisconsin to plow the Loop Trail for the first time this winter.

City officials reached an agreement with their counterparts in St. Croix County, Wisconsin, that will see Stillwater crews clear the trail on the Wisconsin side of the St. Croix River whenever snow accumulates, Public Works Director Shawn Sanders told the City Council.

St. Croix County will pay Stillwater $200 each time the Wisconsin side of the trail is plowed, according to the agreement, which City Council members unanimously approved last month.

The 4.7-mile Loop Trail is a walking and biking trail that connects Stillwater and Oak Park Heights to Holton and St. Joseph Township in Wisconsin via the Stillwater Lift Bridge and St. Croix Crossing bridge.

Stillwater has been responsible for maintaining the Minnesota half of the trail since it opened in 2017, while there has been no maintenance on 2.3 miles of the trail in Wisconsin, Sanders said in a memo to city officials.

Plowing the Loop Trail in Wisconsin will be Stillwater’s lowest priority for clearing after a snowfall, according to the agreement.

"The whole trail is going to be open for the first time since we built this thing, all year-round," Stillwater Mayor Ted Kozlowski said. "I’m so excited about that."
