Stillwater Schools Sets Shortlist For Superintendent Interviews

Interim Superintendent Malina Lansfeldt is joined on the shortlist by six others. Finalists are due to be interviewed Monday and Tuesday.

STILLWATER, MN — The Stillwater Area Public Schools board has narrowed down its list of contenders to be the district’s next permanent superintendent to seven names.

Board members are scheduled to interview finalists during public sessions at 5:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. The public interviews will be recorded and posted to the district’s website Wednesday, officials said.

Interim Superintendent Malina Lansfeldt, who has served as the district’s interim superintendent since 2020, is joined on the shortlist by several other Minnesota school administrators and one from Nebraska.

The SAPS board will interview Lansfeldt; Prior Lake High School Principal John Bezek; Albert Lea Area Schools Superintendent Mike Funk; and Rock Ridge Public Schools Superintendent Noel Schmidt; as well as former Omaha Central High School Principal Edward Bennett; Steve Troen, director of teaching and learning for District 196; and Eric Schneider, chief academic officer for EdIncites.

The Stillwater Area Public Schools system has not had a permanent superintendent since former schools chief Denise Pontrelli’s departure in June 2020. Lansfeldt took over as interim superintendent on a one-year contract, which was later extended, the Twin Cities Pioneer Press reported.
