Stillwater Students Win Awards For Work On Pony Express, Yearbook

STILLWATER, MN — Three Stillwater Area High School students earned gold medals and more than a dozen others were recognized for their work on the school’s student newspaper and yearbook.

Staffs of The Pony Express and Kabekonian Yearbook earned All-State Gold awards from the Journalism Educators of Minnesota in November, while 12 students on the school newspaper won won individual awards for 2020-21.

Austin Buck, Aiden Flock and Erik Houle received Gold Medallion Awards from the Minnesota High School Press Association, earning first place in the broadcast feature story category for their report, “Sam Anderson endures life-changing injury.”

Connor Quaderer, John Piekarski and Brandon Pilrain earned second place in the broadcast new story for their “Return to school” report, while Abby Anderson, Cassidy Gilliam and Katie Kangas earned third place in the same category for their “Bridge transition program” report, according to the Minnesota High School Press Association.

Sophia Arndt earned third place in the feature story category for “Becoming myself: Brendon Rich”; Olivia Bystrom earned fourth place in the newspaper story editorial category for “Biden’s minimum wage proposal not enough”; and Elizabeth Harter earned fifth place in sports story writing for “Wrestling team may miss chance to take home first at state.”

Stillwater Area High School’s Kabekonian Yearbook staff earned fourth place in the theme package category for its 2020-21 edition, titled “Right Side Up.”

Six SAHS students won individual awards from the Minnesota High School Press Association for their work on the school’s yearbook.

‘Medium’ COVID-19 Risk In Washington County As Cases Climb In MN: CDC

Drew Jurek earned third place in the academics/club story category for “Hands-on work from home,” while Stella Bertsch, Lizzie Dorschner, Anthony Toscano and Nile Tesfahunan earned fourth place in spread design for their package titled “The mask debate.”

Alex Corbett earned third place in the sports story category for “The Manning legacy,” according to the organization.

The Minnesota High School Press Association’s Gold Medallion awards honor the best individual work across seven categories. No state convention was held during the 2020-21 school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization said.
