East Ridge Earns AVID Certification

From East Ridge High School:

East Ridge High School’s dedication to closing the achievement gap through AVID has resulted in obtaining the status of Certified AVID School.

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic elective course that prepares students for college readiness and success, and it is scheduled during the regular school day as a year-long course.  Each week, students receive instruction utilizing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, motivational activities and academic success skills.  In AVID, students participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to support their academic growth.

The overall certification rating for the school is based on the individual levels of implementation of each of the eleven AVID essentials.  The essentials range from “enrollment in rigorous curriculum” and “school commitment to full implementation of the AVID system” to “student tutorials” (collaborative learning groups) and “writing” development to prepare for college.

Attaining a level of  “AVID Certified” means that all AVID essentials are rated Meets Certification Standards (Level 1) or higher.  This achievement was reached through the hard work and collaboration of AVID trained teachers, Administrators, and AVID students both in the elective course and across all curricular disciplines.
