Democrat Amanda Hemmingsen-Jaeger, a state representative who represents half of the district in the Minnesota House, ran on her record of steady leadership and community engagement. She previously won her House seat in 2022 and was re-elected in 2024 with about 60 percent of the vote.

Republican Dwight Dorau, who ran unopposed in the August primary, campaigned as a conservative alternative in the East Metro suburbs. He emphasized traditional Republican priorities and sought to flip the seat in a district where Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris won roughly 60 percent of the vote in 2024.

The outcome carries statewide significance, as Democrats held a one-seat majority in the Minnesota Senate last session.
