Woodbury Middle School Seeks Math Volunteers

Woodbury Middly School is proud to announce that we have been awarded a grant from the Minnesota Math Corps for the 2013-2014 school year! 

Have you ever considered changing a child’s life by helping them learn basic math skills? Woodbury Middle School is pleased to be partnering with the Minnesota Math Corps and is seeking volunteers willing to work with students in grades 6-9 in math.

The Minnesota Math Corps is facing the challenge by providing opportunities for volunteers (paid) to work in local schools. Volunteers are asked to commit for one year, beginning August 2013.  

Why Math Corps matters:

• Passing algebra is strongly linked with college attendance and graduation.
• Right now, nearly two in five Minnesota eighth graders are not on track to pass this course.
• Jobs that require math-intensive skills are growing at a much faster rate-three to one-than overall job growth.
• One key indicator of the risk of dropping out of high school is failure in math courses.

Woodbury Middle School has been fortunate to be partnering with Minnesota Math Corps since 2011!  This grant continues to allow us to enlist the services of one full-time  OR  two part-time math tutor(s) to come in to our school and work with students for the 2013-2014 school year.  The math member will receive training from Minnesota Math Corps and will be supported by a licensed teacher in the school.  A monthly stipend, health insurance, and compensation towards college costs will be offered.
