Award for Engineer, Church Seeks Sign Approval: Woodbury Council Preview

Woodbury Engineer Klayton Eckles will be recognized for winning award at Wednesday’s City Council meeting, and the city will also review plans for an electronic sign at Resurrection Lutheran Church.

Eckles' award comes from the American Public Works Association (APWA), which each year recognizes an individual with Charles Walter Nichols Award, honoring “leadership in the area of environmental protection and sustainability,” according to a council memo.

“Klayton has played an instrumental role in the City’s core environmental principles,” reads part of the council memo. “Through his leadership, the City of Woodbury received the Minnesota Chapter’s Award for Environmental Stewardship in 2010. In 2011, APWA recognized Woodbury by awarding the City its first ever Sustainability Practices award. Each of these awards was a direct result of Klayton’s forward thinking leadership in the implementation of environmentally friendly and sustainable policies with the City.”

Factors that contributed to the award included:

• MIDS Process led to the new statewide criteria for infiltration
• Roadway Design Principles
• Stormwater Management
• Potable Water Strategic Initiative
• Infiltration and Water Reuse Pioneer
• Wilmes Ravine Stormwater Improvements
• East Ridge High School Collaboration Project
• Leader in “Skinny Street” and Roundabout Design

“Klayton’s passion for delivering projects and programs that exceed expectations in cost effectiveness and environmental protection has yielded many examples of successful outcomes,” the memo reads. “Perhaps even more important, he has been willing to share our successes and experiences with other communities and public works professionals via his active engagement in professional organizations. His desire to make a difference in our community and the greater world has resulted in positive change around the region.”

Resurrection Lutheran Church is looking to install an electronic display sign at the church, located at 9925 Bailey Road.

Leroy Signs Inc, on behalf of Resurrection Lutheran, is seeking an interim conditional-use permit for the sign.

The Woodbury City Council meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at City Hall.
