LWV Hosts Dr. Elhassan To Speak On Twin Cities Water Supply

Dr. Ali Elhassan, manager of water supply planning for the Metropolitan Council, oversees assessing the region’s water supplies and developing plans to ensure that projected demands can be met.  He has more than 15 years experience in groundwater hydrology, water supply and use, water resources planning and management.

At the Woodbury/Cottage Grove League of Women Voters meeting, Dr. Elhassan will speak on the long-range outlook for our area’s clean water supply.

Dr. Elhassan says “Reliable sources of clean water have been critical to development of the Twin Cities region and that need continues today.  With a growing population, more business and industry, and a rapidly changing environment, the long-range outlook for clean water is not what it used to be.  Today, due to increased groundwater pumping to accommodate development, aquifers are being depleted.  Lakes, streams, and wetlands are being affected.  Given projected growth, we anticipate the problem to be exacerbated if we continue mostly relying on groundwater “business as usual.”
