Woodbury Leadership Academy (WLA) is a tuition-free, K-12 public charter school where high expectations and success matter to all! Our learning environment and school community promotes academic achievement for students in grades K-12, as well as personal integrity, equity and a dedication to value and serve others. Our school is committed to our students’ long term success. We use inquiry based learning by teaching the Core Knowledge Curriculum — building strong skills in math, reading, writing, history, science and technology. We also have a strong character education program to ensure students develop exceptional leadership skills. The character education program includes service learning projects and a focus of five core virtues - respect, responsibility, perseverance, gratitude and humanity. WLA uses the rigorous and classical Core Knowledge Curriculum to build strong foundational knowledge across subjects, promoting academic excellence and equity. By ensuring all students share common knowledge, we can narrow achievement gaps and build critical thinking and long-term success. The academic rigor at WLA prepares students for college and ready to lead. We out-perform the MCA Minnesota State average in all categories! Check out our report card. WLA is a public school with a private school feeling. WLA students wear school uniforms to promote equality, reduce peer pressure, and minimize distractions. Small class sizes at WLA allow for teachers and staff to provide personalized instruction, build strong relationships, and increase student engagement. Julie Nielsen, principal at <a href="https://woodbury.patch.com/search?keywords=Middleton+Elementary+School" rel="nofollow">Middleton Elementary</a> in Woodbury, sent out an update Wednesday, Aug. 7, about a substitute principal at the school: I wanted to provide you with a quick update on my replacement for the first couple months of school. Karen Toomey, retired Principal from District #196 (Rosemount, Apple Valley, Eagan), will officially begin on Monday, August 12th.  We have met already so the transition will go smoothly. Karen is wonderful and will do an excellent job. Should you have any questions as the year gets started, please give Mrs. Toomey or Mrs. Downs a call. Also, watch for your parent mailing coming home sometime next week. Please say "hello" to your children from me, have a great start and I will see you in the building when I return following the November 5th referendum election. Take care - Julie
