WOODBURY, MN — Public school teacher pay is a hot-button issue in Minnesota right now as educators in St. Paul and Minneapolis prepare to strike over salary, class sizes, mental health support and other issues.

Average teacher pay in Minnesota ranges widely by district and region, and starting salaries can be dramatically lower than what a tenured staff member earns.

Teachers in the South Washington County Schools system made an average of $79,032 in 2021, the 18th highest average salary among Minnesota districts, according to data from the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board.

The average teacher salary in the St. Paul Public School District was $85,457 — the sixth highest in the state — while the Minneapolis Public School District ranked 47th, with an average teacher salary of $71,535, the licensing board's data show.

The Math and Science Academy in Woodbury ranked 439th, with an average salary of $48,790.

Woodbury Leadership Academy had the third-lowest average teacher salary ($34,079) of the 538 Minnesota districts and charter schools for which the MPELS Board provided data.
