Woodbury Group To Host Juneteenth Celebration Saturday In Ojibway Park

WOODBURY, MN — A group of Woodbury residents seeking to end systemic inequalities and racial injustices is set to host a Juneteenth celebration Saturday in Ojibway Park.

Woodbury for Justice and Equality’s family friendly “Juneteenth Day” event is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature free food, speakers and a DJ, according to the group.

Saturday’s event is Woodbury for Justice and Equality’s second annual Juneteenth celebration after the group held its inaugural event last year.

Juneteenth is a holiday to commemorate the date in 1865 when word reached the last enslaved people in Texas that the Civil War had ended and they were free.

President Joe Biden signed legislation last year making Juneteenth an official holiday and the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday was approved in 1983. Juneteenth is oldest-known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States.

Woodbury for Justice and Equality says its mission is “to learn about systemic inequalities and racial injustices in our community in order to seek solutions to change the status quo.”

“Our vision is to have a Woodbury where everyone has an equal opportunity and feels welcomed,” the group said on its website.
