Woodbury Knocks Off Stillwater for First State Team Wrestling Bid

Six Woodbury wrestlers had perfect 3-0 records, including first-year 195-pounder John McNiff, as the Royals knocked off the Stillwater Ponies and clinched the squad’s first-ever State 3A Wrestling Team Tournament bid Friday night.

Josh McClain, the Royals’ undersized heavyweight, clinched the match, but it was the performances of McNiff, Ty Johnson, Young Vang, Ben Donnelly, Justin Harold-Plakut and Howard Jones that paced the Royals as they rolled over Cretin-Derham Hall and Tartan en route to the Section 4-3A crown.

McNiff chalked up two pins along with a big win in his match in the final. Donnelly, ranked No. 6 at 145 pounds, added three wins, all by fall, and Harold-Plakut also pinned his way through the team tournament at 160 pounds.

Members of the squad told the Woodbury Bulletin they had waited all year for a rematch with Stillwater, which knocked off the Royals last year for a trip to the team tournament.  

The Royals will wrestle this weekend in the Section 4-3A individual tournament, which begins Friday afternoon at Woodbury High.
