The First Cut is the Kindest

Woodbury vet offers low-cost spay and neuter surgeries for pets of low-income individuals.

Dr. Meghann Kruck wanted to cut down on euthanasia among healthy pets.

So the Woodbury veterinarian started making cuts of a different kindβ€”offering to spay or neuter the pets of low-income families at a reduced cost.

Kruck’s Kindest Cut partners with the to offer the service at more than 25 locations around the Twin Cities and beyond.Β The mobile vet started up in May 2011, and since its inception Kindest Cuts has performed more than 8,850 surgeries.Β

"Our first goal is to bring down euthanasia in healthy pets," Kruck said. "We also want to foster relationships with pets and their vets."

Kruck previously worked as a veterinarian in a private practice, but she started her business after she heard the Human Society was seeking a partner to offer low-cost spay and neuter services.Β

It costs between $40 and $100 to spay and neuter a pet through Kindest Cut, as opposed to $100 to $300 at a standard veterinary practice, Kruck said.

Pet owners interested in the service must qualify as low-income individuals or families.

Kindest Cut provides low-cost spay and neuter surgeries for dogs, cats and rabbits in its traveling surgical unit. Licensed veterinarians perform the surgeries while volunteers help check in the pets and sterilize the surgical instruments.
