Woodbury School Finishes 3rd At Boys Basketball State Tournament

WOODBURY, MN — New Life Academy’s boys basketball team fell short in its quest to bring a state title back to Woodbury, but the Eagles shook off the disappointment of their semifinal defeat to rebound and earn a third-place finish at the tournament.

Playing in its first state tournament for boys basketball in 18 years, the Woodbury private Christian school beat Sacred Heart 64-58 on Thursday in the Class A state quarterfinal to set up a battle with the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa High School Jaguars.

The Eagles and Jaguars traded leads throughout the first half of Friday's game, with Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa taking a three-point advantage into halftime, according to statistics from the Minnesota State High School League.

The Jaguars extended their lead to nine points midway through the second half before New Life Academy launched a comeback to lead 50-46 with less than six minutes left in the Class A semifinal at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa then went on a 7-0 run to open up a 53-50 lead with less than three minutes before the final buzzer, before New Life Academy’s Hendricks scored a layup and a resulting free throw to tie the score at 53 with a minute left, MSHSL statistics show.

Woodbury Elementary Students Win MN Zoo’s STEM Challenge

Jaguars sophomore Luke Dingmann was fouled with about 15 seconds left in the game and scored both free throws to give Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa a 55-53 win and send the school to the Class A state final, where they lost 51-49 to Hayfield.

Kollin Kaemingk led New Life Academy’s offense with 23 points, while Maxwell Briggs added 12 and Erick Reader had nine points, according to MSHSL statistics.

The Eagles ended their stellar season with a resounding 75-50 win Saturday over Cherry to finish as the third-best Class A boys basketball team in Minnesota. Kaemingk scored 30 points to lead New Life Academy to victory, while Reader scored 12 points, MSHSL statistics show.

The score was tied at 25-25 at halftime, but the Eagles added 50 points in the second half, doubling Cherry’s offensive output in the final period of the season.

New Life Academy’s Kollin Kaemingk and Maxwell Briggs were named to the 2022 All-Tournament Team for the Class A boys basketball state championship.
