📰 News we're reading

1. Late and millions over budget, Jackson completes Phase 1A street resurfacing (clarionledger.com) — Jackson has finally finished Phase 1A of its long-delayed street resurfacing project, but the work came in about 18 months late and more than $6 million over the original budget. City leaders now plan to spend over $34 million across three phases, funded largely by Jackson’s 1% sales tax and internet sales tax, to repave nearly 200 streets citywide.

2. Warrant issued in search for missing 81-year-old woman (wapt.com) — Jackson police are urgently searching the Baybury Lane area for 81-year-old Carol Ryan, a Jackson woman reported missing on Saturday under what investigators call suspicious circumstances. Multiple agencies are assisting, a warrant has been issued to search a nearby home and vehicles, and residents are asked to contact Jackson Police immediately with any information that could help locate her.

3. Metrocenter developer outlines future plans for the property (wlbt.com) — Developers are moving ahead with an $80 million plan to turn Jackson’s aging Metrocenter mall into a “mini-city” with 600 apartments, public safety services, and a clinic. Working with the City of Jackson and Ward 5’s councilman, crews are already fencing the site and preparing to replace water and sewer lines, with visible progress expected by late summer or early fall.

4. Medical Cannabis Advocates Want Higher Potency, ‘Right to Try' (mississippifreepress.org) — Medical cannabis advocates and patients packed a meeting at the Mississippi Capitol in Jackson to push for higher THC limits, easier card renewals, and a broader “right-to-try” option. Board members and physicians from around the state, along with Rep. Lee Yancey, debated safety, stigma, and how any changes could affect access for Jackson-area and statewide patients who rely on the program.

5. Goon Squad: ‘The Devil Come to Me' (mississippitoday.org) — Residents following Jackson-area justice issues will recognize this deep investigation into Rankin County deputies who tortured two Black men and the broader culture that enabled them, including earlier racist violence in Jackson. The story traces former deputy Christian Dedmon’s path from Pearl to the “Goon Squad,” exposes alleged systemic brutality, and highlights ongoing concerns that other officers tied to similar conduct still haven’t faced charges.
