PHOTOS: Superheroes Promote Girls Fitness During 5K Run

More than 6,000 runners participated in Saturday's race in downtown St. Louis.

Girls from around the St. Louis region ran in the annual Girls on the Run 5K Saturday in downtown St. Louis.

The organization promotes fitness and self-esteem and is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Girls in elementary school trained twice a week for 10 weeks for the 5K. 

This year, the race's theme was "Be your own superhero."
