📰 News we're reading

1. Dog shot on Christmas Eve recovering, as case highlights animal abuse (firstalert4.com) — A badly injured dog found on Christmas Eve in St. Louis’ Baden neighborhood is recovering after surgery, and police are actively investigating who shot him. Stray Rescue of St. Louis is caring for Wallace while officers pursue animal abuse leads and emphasize that such cruelty cases are increasingly common and taken seriously in the city.

2. 2 dead, 4 injured in late Friday night crash near Moline Acres (firstalert4.com) — Two people were killed and four others injured late Friday in a two-car crash on southbound Highway 367 near Moline Acres, just outside St. Louis. Missouri State Highway Patrol says a Chrysler 300 crossed the center line and was struck by a Mazda 3, killing a 26-year-old passenger at the scene and a 22-year-old driver at the hospital. The remaining occupants suffered moderate to serious injuries.

3. A thorny-looking Missouri bug is shaking up what survival looks like as global temperatures rise (stlpr.org) — St. Louis University researchers are uncovering how a tiny Missouri treehopper copes with rising temperatures, offering clues to which species might withstand climate change. Their work shows warmer conditions can hurt young insects but boost adult fertility, and even change how these bugs “sing.” The findings highlight how crucial insect resilience is for biodiversity that ultimately affects birds and broader ecosystems Missourians rely on.

4. Aeroglyphs: de-code (meer.com) — A new exhibition, “Aeroglyphs: De-code | Re-code,” is opening at Bruno David Gallery, which represents several innovative St. Louis artists alongside international names. The show features large-scale photographic works built from drone imagery, exploring how city architecture can be read like a system of symbols in an age of synthetic images.

5. Police ask for help finding endangered 20-year-old (firstalert4.com) — St. Louis County police are urgently asking residents to help locate 20-year-old Keith Michael Kirkman-Newland, missing since late Friday near the Blanchette Memorial Bridge and considered endangered and possibly suicidal. He’s described as 6 feet tall, 135 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes, and distinctive tattoos on his right hand and neck. Anyone with information should call 911 or St. Louis County police immediately.
