Man Charged With Shooting At Officers, Injuring One In South City

A robbery suspect shot an officer in south St. Louis City during an attempted traffic stop Friday evening. Police charged 30-year-old Darne Ricks Saturday with resisting arrest, two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action. Darne Ricks is facing multiple charges after shooting at officers. Officials with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said two officers saw a gold 2004 Chevy Impala wanted for a robbery in the 3700 block of Nebraska just after 6 p.m. Officers tried to pull the car over, but the driver kept going.

The car eventually crashed and Ricks got out and fired shots at the two officers, hitting one of them above the right eye. The officers returned fire. Police Chief John Hayden said he believes the suspect wasn't struck. Ricks was taken into custody and a gun was seized. The injured officer was taken to a hospital for treatment and was later released. Hayden said the wound isn't too deep. The officer is 26-years-old. "Anytime that happens, your heart drops and you start praying because you want to make sure the officer is okay," Hayden said. "When I got here, I saw him smiling, his wife is here, so I was very thankful to see the officer was okay."St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones said gun violence should be consider a public health crisis: Thankfully the officer's injuries were minor and he is recovering at home. Nobody is immune to the epidemic of gun violence plaguing our city -- not our families, not our officers, and especially not our children. We need to declare gun violence a public health crisis.
