📰 News we're reading

1. Billings West's Matt 'Moose' Ludwig commits to Texas Tech football (missoulian.com) — Billings West football standout Matt “Moose” Ludwig has flipped his college commitment and is now headed to Texas Tech, capping a hectic recruiting week for the Gatorade Montana Player of the Year. His decision puts a Billings prep star on a Big 12 stage and highlights the growing visibility of local high school talent.

2. Male snowmobiler survives avalanche near Cooke City (ktvq.com) — A recent avalanche near Cooke City nearly turned deadly, and a Billings resident who survived a similar slide in 2002 is using his experience to push avalanche safety. Speaking from his job at a Billings powersports shop, he and a coworker urge local snowmobilers to invest in proper gear, training, and avalanche forecasts before heading into the backcountry.

3. Rocky football coach Chris Stutzriem steps down to pursue another coaching avenue (ktvq.com) — Rocky Mountain College’s head football coach Chris Stutzriem has resigned in Billings after seven seasons to pursue another coaching opportunity, and offensive coordinator Teague Blome will serve as interim coach while a national search begins. Stutzriem, who thanked the Billings community for its support, leaves after a 4-6 season and a 2021 campaign that earned him Frontier coach of the year honors.

4. Investigator: ‘No reasonable cause' to believe state senator discriminated • Daily Montanan (dailymontanan.com) — A state investigation found no reasonable cause that Sen. Barry Usher, who represents part of the Billings area, unlawfully discriminated during the 2025 legislative session. Helena Sen. Mary Ann Dunwell, who filed the complaint, is weighing a district court case focused on whether legislative immunity can conflict with the public’s right to know and participate in government.

5. How Montana teachers use a Hanukkah kit to teach students who've never met a Jew (forward.com) — Billings’ powerful 1993 response to an antisemitic attack is now central to how Montana teachers explain Hanukkah and standing up to hate, from rural colonies to city classrooms. A Billings high school class is using the story, a picture book, and a documentary to connect local history with broader lessons before reading Night by Elie Wiesel.
