📰 News we're reading

1. 'Passion and commitment': County appoints Democrat Katie Fire Thunder to Ed Stafman's HD 59 position (bozemandailychronicle.com) — Gallatin County commissioners have appointed 25-year-old Bozeman housing advocate Katie Fire Thunder to represent House District 59, which covers southeastern Bozeman, through 2027. A co-founder of Bozeman Tenants United and MSU graduate, she’ll bring her legal and legislative experience to the Legislature while working with Native American caucus members and planning for a 2027 election run.

2. New Lighthouse Ranch facility aims to transform youth behavioral health in Gallatin Valley (explorebigsky.com) — A major new youth behavioral health campus near Belgrade is moving forward with significant backing from Bozeman institutions, including Bozeman Health and the Bozeman-based Rieschel Foundation. Lighthouse Ranch aims to expand from outpatient services to crisis stabilization and full residential treatment, so Gallatin Valley teens can get intensive care close to home instead of traveling to distant cities.

3. Police reports: Headlight altercations, shadow boxing and computer scams (bozemandailychronicle.com) — Recent Bozeman Police Department logs detail odd encounters on Peets Hill, a reported break-in involving an intoxicated man with a gun, and a costly computer scam targeting a local resident. Additional calls include driveway blockages on Willson Avenue and Gallatin County reports of a swerving semi near the I-90 airport exit.

4. Bozeman High's Greta Wolpoe signs to play lacrosse at Mercyhurst University (bozemandailychronicle.com) — A standout Bozeman High lacrosse player, Greta Wolpoe, has signed to play Division I lacrosse at Mercyhurst University after leading Bozeman teams to multiple strong state finishes. She credits Bozeman’s lacrosse community, coaches, and her brother’s example for shaping her path, and will finish her senior season here before heading east next fall.

5. Paradise Valley open space initiative falters amid political priority reversal (explorebigsky.com) — A major federal funding reversal is jeopardizing a conservation push in Paradise Valley that’s closely tied to Bozeman-based Gallatin Valley Land Trust. Local ranchers near the historic stagecoach route between Bozeman and Yellowstone worry lost easement dollars will accelerate subdivision, threaten wildlife corridors, and erode the “old Montana” landscape that helps define the wider Bozeman region.
