Here are the top three stories in Reno today:
- In Spanish Springs, a 3.2 magnitude earthquake was reported on Sunday evening by the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada Reno. The quake occurred at approximately 6:50 p.m. and was felt by residents in downtown Reno and Sparks, as indicated by calls received by the KTVN newsroom. A couple of aftershocks, measuring 2.03 and 2.93 magnitudes, respectively, were reported shortly after the initial earthquake. Fortunately, there have been no reports of any damages or injuries caused by the seismic activity. (KTVN)
- A new feature-length documentary by This Is Reno is delving into the pressing issues of growth, housing, and homelessness in the region over the past two decades. With footage dating back to 2010, the film, "A City in Crisis," offers an unfiltered examination of official statements and the firsthand experiences of those affected by their decisions. The documentary, which features contributions from the University of Nevada, Reno graduate Carly Sauvageau, aims to create awareness and prompt change and will be showcased at an invitation-only screening in August before being made available on streaming platforms and entered into film festivals nationwide. - If you commuted on Monday morning, you may have experienced traffic on Old Virginia Road. The road, spanning from Damonte Ranch to South Meadows, was temporarily shut down as authorities conducted an investigation into a tragic collision involving a cyclist that resulted in a fatality. The incident occurred shortly after 10:45 a.m. on Monday. Law enforcement confirmed that the driver involved in the crash is cooperating with the investigation, and there were no indications of impairment. (KTVN)
