Here are the top three stories today in Reno:
- In the early hours of Tuesday, a domestic dispute at the Bonanza Casino escalated into a shooting incident, leading to the arrest of Joshua Slater-King, a 36-year-old man. Allegedly targeting his ex-partner's current boyfriend, Slater-King shot the victim before fleeing from the scene. However, he was swiftly apprehended by the Reno Police Department. The injured individual received medical treatment for non-life-threatening wounds, while Slater-King now faces charges of attempted murder, battery with a deadly weapon, and assault with a deadly weapon. - The Washoe County Animal Shelter is currently operating at 70 percent capacity, which is an improvement from its previous state of overcrowding. It has been facing a capacity crisis for several months, struggling to accommodate the increasing number of dogs coming in. To address the situation, they are collaborating closely with adoption partners such as the Humane Society and SPCA of Northern Nevada, encouraging people to adopt from these organizations. If the shelter fails to free up space, they may have to resort to euthanizing dogs for the first time in 15 years. (KTVN)
- The Karma Box Project and Redirect Athletics have partnered to organize a free fitness event called "Train for Tacos," which aims to support individuals in recovery. This transformative community event, taking place on Jul. 9 and following Sundays throughout the summer, combines High-Intensity Interval Training, boxing, and community engagement to address the challenges of mental illness. Participants can experience the positive impact of physical exercise while fostering personal growth and resilience in a safe and inclusive environment. After the workout session, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a delicious taco lunch and connect with others in the community.
