Here are the top three stories today in Reno:
- The Washoe County Sheriff's Office will be partnering with the Washoe County Honorary Deputy Sheriff's Association and AT&T Pioneers to host the fifth annual Christmas in July Back-to-School event at the end of the month. This free event will provide more than 1,500 students with the necessary supplies they need to prepare for the incoming school year from school supplies to hygiene items and lunch. The event will take place on Jul. 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. For more information, you can call (775) 785-6228 or email SO-OutreachPrograms@washoecounty.us. (Washoe County Sheriff's Office)
- Over the weekend, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office had to rescue an injured hiker via airlift from Hunter Creek Trail. The hiker was only about one and a half miles into the trail, but a ground rescue was impossible due to the terrain. The sheriff's office worked together with Washoe County Search and Rescue teams along with REMSA personnel to safely extract the injured hiker from the trail and get the medical support they needed. (KRNV)
- At the end of the month, the Driver's Edge program will return to Reno, which teaches defensive driving techniques to those with a license under the age of 21. This half-day course features behind-the-wheel and classroom learning on driving safety and how to quickly react and respond to accident situations. The course will be offered from Thursday, Jul. 27 to Sunday, Jul. 30. If the sessions are packed by the time you attempt to register, you may add yourself to the waitlist. These courses are taught by professional drivers, and the class is fully funded by the Office of Traffic Safety. (KTVN)
