Here are the top three stories today in Reno:

  1. Reno is preparing to celebrate its first official Juneteenth as a state holiday, commemorating the abolition of slavery in Texas after the Civil War. Festivities include the Nevada African American Firefighter Museum, which will be open to the public on Saturday, the official Reno Juneteenth celebration at Idlewild Park featuring live entertainment and games, and an evening of poetry at Shim's Surplus Supplies. Government offices will be closed on Jun. 19, and RTC Transit Service will operate on a Saturday-level schedule. (Reno Gazette Journal)
  2. On Wednesday night (Jun. 14), the 104th annual Reno Rodeo commenced with an energetic kick-off concert by Brothers Osborne, marking the beginning of one of Reno's grandest events. Running now through Jun. 24, the renowned rodeo has quickly sold out online, leaving limited ticket availability in person. The annual event offers exhilarating rodeo performances along with a carnival, diverse food options, shopping, and games. (KTVN)
  3. On Jun. 12, Reno resident Owen Gray embarked on a remarkable journey to row the entire length of the Pacific Ocean, covering 2,800 miles from Monterey, California to Kuai, Hawaii. Gray is participating in the "World's Toughest Row" competition, pushing the boundaries of human endurance and taking on unpredictable weather and daunting waves. With no engine-powered assistance, Gray and his partner will rely on their strength and resilience, rowing in shifts and using innovative technologies to convert salt water into fresh. Gray's ultimate goal is to raise $100,000 for Okizu, a non-profit organization supporting families affected by childhood cancer in northern Nevada. (KRNV)
