- A new arthouse cinema officially opened this week in Reno. Theater 42, located at 201 W. Moana Lane, hosted its first film screening on Thursday. The arthouse cinema opened about six months after founder Austin Lugo announced the idea. Theater 42 is a small, 20-seat theater with a 12- by 10-foot screen in a room that was originally a law office. (Subscription: Reno Gazette-Journal)
- The mother of the student accused of assaulting a Dilworth Middle School teacher in December reached out to the local news to talk about the assault and her son. Jennifer Nolan said although her son has behavioral issues, he didn't touch the teacher and she supports his version of events. The accused student is being charged with battery against a protected person. (KOLO)
- A "bomb cyclone" – a storm with a dramatic drop in atmospheric pressure – on the West Coast is expected to bring heavy rain and snow throughout Northern Nevada today, Jan. 6. Reno residents could see several inches of snow. Another storm is expected to sweep through the area on Saturday with a larger storm expected to come through the area early next week. - Radon is a dangerous, cancer-causing gas that can be found in many homes. Luckily, you can check for radon levels in your house with an easy home kit. The University of Nevada, Reno Extension is offering free radon home test kids throughout the months of January and February as part of January's National Radon Action Month. (KOLO)
